Match report Dinnington RUFC 2nds v Pontefract RUFC 2nds

Match report Dinnington RUFC 2nds v Pontefract RUFC 2nds. Game played Saturday 23.11.19. at Dinnington, KO 2.15pm. Pontefract 2nds travelled to Dinnington for their away league fixture. Playing conditions under foot were heavy which generally favours Dinningtons renowned strong forward play. However the visitors made a good start, playing in the oppositions half. Centre Andy Coleman made the half break but couldn’t get the pass away in the tackle. Pontefract then got drawn into an arm wrestle. Dinnington frustratingly always getting the benefit of the 50/50 decisions. Toby Field yellow carded for holding onto the ball after the tackle. The home side then going in front with a penalty goal kick following a high tackle decision. 3-0. Both sides commendably had effective defence, however Pontefract had long tough spells without the ball. In the closing phases of the first half the visitors managed to get play close to the home side try line but time was called with the score remaining at 3-0. In the second half Pontefract moved the ball around much more to give clarity to their play. A try was disallowed along with a yellow card for Andy Fentons retaliation. A home side high tackle gave the visitors half a chance and number 10 Tom Carr spotted the space and threw a perfectly timed pass to hit forward James Brownsword who crashed through the line of outstretched defenders to score the much needed try for the visitors. Tom Carr kicked the goal. 3-7. Pontefract kept up the pressure, Tom Carr setting up Stu Dedicoat for a try but the wet ball slipped out of his hands as he went over the try line. A returning lock ( yellow card )Andy Fenton changed the direction of play as the majority of the home team on the open surged off side. Rampaging down the blind side and off loading to a supporting Dan Wheater who scored the try. Tom Carr kicked the goal. 3-14. The home side started to tire and sniping scrum half Dan Wheater spotted the space and raced through the gap, outpaced the covering defence to score his second try. No goal. Final score 3-19. A tough uncompromising game where Pontefract had to make do with minimal possession in the first half. Early opportunity’s missed for one reason or another. Pontefract playing a more purposeful and productive second half to ensure a win. Stand outs Liam Senior who grafted throughout against a massive front row. Returning prop from injury, young Toby Field who showed his true potential. Dan Wheater typically scored two vital tries to put put the game out of reach for the home side. James Brownswords try, much needed at that stage of the game to re energise and lift spirits. Pontefract 2nds are at home to Google 2nds Saturday 30.11.19. kick off 2.15pm. All welcome.
