Barnsley 2vx 10 Pontefract 2xv 41
Pontefract continued their winning run with a comfortable victory over traditionally strong opponents from south Yorkshire.
The visitors attacked the host's line from the kick off with a series of powerful drives from a determined and motivated pack led by Toby Field and steamer resulting in Billy Coleman crashing over from a well worked line out. 0-5
Barnsley immediately struck back with an excellent try out flanking a hesitant defence despite efforts from Leo Harrison, Field and captain Hawkins. 5-5
Pontefract regained the upper hand at the set piece and lay siege to the home line. A prolonged period of pressure tested a robust home defence that effectively repelled phase after phase denying Bennett a score but conceding a 5m scrum from which Carr cleverly created a gap that Ben Jones streaked through to score to regain the lead 5-12
The backs began to stretch the home defence and after a silky break from Simpson, Wiggins burst over to extent the lead to 5-19. A further try by Ben Jones after an audacious pass from Carr saw pontefract go into the interval with a well deserved 5-24 lead.
The second half was a bit of an arm wrestle that took Pontefract a while to reassert their dominance after a determined effort from the host's. The deadlock was broken when Liam Tennant forced his way over after a bullocking run from a rampant Toby Field. 5-31. This was quickly followed by Liams second try after some dynamic forward play by a dominant pack. 5-36.
The host's bravely rallied and deservedly scored a second try to reduce the arrears to 10-36.
However, Ponte had the final say when Potter stormed over to settle the game 10-41.
Another all round preformance by pontefract featuring some great counter attacking from Wheater and Jones and illusive running from Simpson.
A solid forward effort typified by Leo Harrison who dominated the line out and was a real thorn in Barnsleys side all game.
MOM was undoubtedly Toby Field, who,it was rumoured, had "eaten Steamers breakfast"
