It was an unseasonably warm day in North Yorkshire as Ponte continued their promising start to the season, with an impressive win.

It was a proud day for the club with the new philosophy of promoting youth, highlighted by giving two seventeen years old their debuts after impressive starts to the season. Sam Valente and Josh Sundin both had solid games to highlight their rich potential.

Ponte conceded a penalty early on but soon hit back with a dazzling individual effort from Lucas Ketteridge, converted by Liam Kay. The joy was short-lived however as sloppy defence allowed the hosts to take the lead with a converted try.

There was no panic from the visitors as a ten-metre scrum was taken against the head allowed the super sharp backline to put Ketteridge under the posts for his second converted try.

The whole backline were looking impereious and from the kick off Ponte threw it wide in their own twenty two to lightening full back Tom Papworth who beat many would be defenders before putting centre Sam Gilbert away for a glorious try.

A knock on from the kick off allowed Malton territory deep inside the Ponte twenty two and despite good defence they scored an unconverted try out wide.

With half time approaching it looked like a six point game but that was stretched to thirteen as once again the outside backs combined superbly to put Papworth in from half way.

Soon after half time Ponte virtually put the game to bed as an excellent line out take from hard working second row Alex Wilson allowed a forward drive, which in turn allowed Kay to show and go under the posts against a retreating defence.

From then on, the home side exerted some pressure, with Ponte’s defence having to be at its outstanding best. The only downside to Ponte’s performance were three yellow cards, which could have been costly on another occasion. James Grant the director of rugby commented on the need for all individuals to take pride in their personal discipline for the good of the team.

With Ponte down to twelve men the home side managed a try, but it was Ponte who rounded off the scoring. A kick through and chase from Linden Metcalfe was left to a foot race with the Ponte man’s greater desire winning the day.

The opposition gave man of the match to returning prop Josh Hough who is causing havoc in the set piece and loose, along with his old partners in crime, the outstanding Tim Pickersgill and Ethan Potts. Other stand outs worthy of mention were Tad Nyanjowa, Alex Fox, Joe Toner and Will Cooke, whilst it was great to see Sam Millard back in a Ponte shirt doing his thing.
