Pocklington v Pontefract Match Report

Phil Atkinson23 Nov - 15:45

Pock's attacking edge is too sharp for Ponte

Newly promoted but unbeaten Pocklington have set the standard in Regional NE 2 this season, but the Pontefract line up included Liam Kay for the first time this season and also had others returning from absences including Tom Webley in the front row.

Right from the kick off Pock showed their intent with some rampant forward work putting Ponte on the back foot in the early stages. This gave them field position to allow a score a simple try from a penalty within the first five minutes.

Ponte hit back with a Kay penalty after some good work by the forwards, only for this to be cancelled our a few minutes later. With the score at 10:3 Pontefract were playing some decent rugby, but Pock’s attacking edge was just too sharp, leading to a 24:3 at half time.

The second half was not much brighter with the home side stretching their lead to 38:3, before Pontefract could hit back with a try by Morgan Punchard who gathered his own kick to score under the posts. This was quickly followed by Joe Arundel crashing over in the corner and Tom Webley who popped up in the centre for Ponte’s final score of the game.

All in all it was a tough day at the office for Pontefract, but Pocklington deserved their win and their position at the top of the league. We look forward to their visit to Moor Lane later in the season. The 2nd XV had a great encounter against their Pocklington counterparts losing by the narrowest of margins 14:15.

Next Saturday presents an exciting fixture at Moor Lane as the 21st XV take on local rivals Selby. All are welcome and kick off is at 2:15pm. Selby leapfrogged Ponte in the league after beating Doncaster at the weekend so there is a lot a stake at this game
