In an exciting encounter at Goole Rufc, Pontefract 2nd XV secured a hard-fought victory over a resilient Goole 2nd XV with a score line of 26-17. The game showcased excellent teamwork, individual brilliance, and a determined defensive effort against a well-structured opposition.

Fly-half Abbott was instrumental in the win, scoring 11 points with his boot. He calmly slotted three penalties, one from an impressive 40 metres, and added two conversions, maintaining control in key moments and delivering an all-around strong performance.

In the try-scoring department, Josh Beddis was the standout, crossing the whitewash twice. His electric runs and sharp decision-making earned him well-deserved praise as he put on a brilliant performance. The legendary Matthew Hardgreaves added the other try in a moment of brilliance, ripping the ball from Goole’s number 8 at a crucial scrum before powering over the line, much to the delight of his teammates and the crowd.

The front row of Toby Ludwig, Luke Townsend, and Scott Hawkins (the veteran of the side) delivered an outstanding performance. They dominated the breakdowns, applied relentless pressure at the scrums, and controlled the lineouts, ensuring a solid platform for the backs to build from.

In the backline, Billy Coleman and Liam Wiggins were pivotal. Their relentless hard carries and rock-solid defence were vital in keeping Goole at bay. Both players displayed grit and determination, stifling Goole’s attack and creating opportunities for Pontefract to gain territory.

The forward pack as a whole contributed significantly, with Conor Gowdy excelling at flanker, and the second-row pairing of Daz Smith and Dec Lewis putting in a monumental shift.

Hardgreaves’ try in particular was a key moment that lifted the entire team. His quick thinking and powerful finish epitomized the fighting spirit of Pontefract, bringing smiles to the players and energizing the side for the final push.

Pontefract’s determination and cohesiveness proved too much for Goole, whose structured play and strong scrum efforts kept the game competitive. However, the hosts’ overall grit and execution ensured a well-deserved victory.

Pontefract’s 2nd XV will take confidence from this performance as they continue their campaign, showcasing their depth and resilience against tough opposition.

Get yourselves down to Moore Lane on Saturday 23rd November to watch the 2nd XV at home against a good Hunslet Wolves side.
