Remembering Alan Cornwell

Andy Fenton

Alan Cornwell was a pillar and a rock for Pontefract RUFC for over fifty years.

Alan Cornwell was a pillar and a rock for Pontefract RUFC for over fifty years.

As club captain in the 60s, as the organiser of the Rags (veterans team in the 70s and 80s), or as an assiduous and industrious worker on the gate - or in hundreds of other wavs around the club, his love for Pontefract showed through in everything he did.

His small stature and his friendly demeanour off the field belied his tenacity and fierce commitment in the confrontations on the field. Alan was a straightforwardly honest man who was admired and loved by all who plaved with or knew him down the decades. He was never one for conceit or affectation, his personality and likeable manner, like his rugby, came through in his down to earth and honest Moor Lane presence.

From evervone at Pontefract: RIP Alan Cornwell.
