The conditions on a bright autumnal day were perfect for rugby, and there was a sense of history in the making as the teams took to the field for the first ever game of senior women's rugby at Moor Lane. There was a bumper crowd on hand to witness the momentous occasion.
Our opponents Hornsea made the journey from the east coast, and played a very committed game. It Ponte a while to find their feet, but when they did their confidence grew and they ran in a series of tries to lead convincingly at half time. But Hornsea came back stronger and more determined in the second half to score a couple of tries of their own after applying some real pressure to the Ponte line. The home side finished in style with some long range tries to seal the win.
The Ponte scorers were:
Olivia Copley x2
Eve Clayton x2
Macey Roberts
Savannah Grace x2
Maya Lindridge
Chelsea Senior
Poppy Adams
Conversions were by
Poppy Adams & Chelsea Senior x2
Thanks are due to the match officials, Hornsea for making the journey and being great opponents, our clubhouse team, Roy Stenton, and everyone who came to enjoy the game.
Committee member Phil Atkinson commented after the game, "for some years now the club has had a vision of forming a senior women's team. Its amazing to see this come to fruition, and the club would like to thank those that have made it happen. We hope this side will thrive and we are proud to provide the women and girls of Pontefract with the opportunity to play rugby union. "
