PRUFC’s old roving reporter for ‘Jockstrap’ (our weekly fanzine edited by Vinniy in the 1990s) dusted off his pad and pen and obtained exclusive access to Owen Farrell at the weekend. It cost us the price of a t-shirt, which Owen promised to wear at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup. The interview went like this.
Owen, here at Pontefract, and indeed the rest of the Five Towns, have a critical issue that we would like you to clarify. It comes in two parts. Firstly, having regard to the new IRB Laws that reduce tackle height requirements, how can players, in the heat of the battle when chaos is all around them and life and limb is in peril, judge where to make contact with the opposition ball-carrier to ensure that sanctions are not imposed? Leading on from that, what do you make of the see-saw disciplinary procedure imposed by the RFU when, first you were awarded a yellow card by the match official for a high tackle, which was then increased to a red following a review by the fourth official, then all convictions were quashed on appeal to an arbitration panel consisting of three senior referees, only for the original verdict to be re-imposed following a review by three judges of the Supreme Court? Surely, not even Donald Trump has to face as much litigation?
