Pontefract U13s vs Scunthorpe U13s

A big challenge stood in front of Pontefract U13’s as they travelled to Scunthorpe - a team boasting success by winning a recent competitive tournament.

It didn’t take long to appreciate the difference in playing styles with Scunthorpe a very Forward based team versus Pontefract’s more expansive philosophy. The first half went try for try until excellent try line defence by Pontefract forced a turned over and with superb execution of a handling move Pontefract scored on the stroke of half time to take a 2 try lead into the interval.

The coaches expected the big playing field to take its toll on the Pontefract players who endured lots of time without the ball. But Pontefract’s defence was simply outstanding turning up for each other time and again to prevent the powerful Scunthorpe team from scoring. When Pontefract finally got some possession they controlled the ball superbly well. They were strong and direct through the middle before moving the ball to the edges exposing the Scunthorpe defence.

It was a brilliant performance with many of the parents saying our best yet. The team work was amazing, the determination inspiring and the skill execution outstanding. A true team performance that left parents and coaches very proud of this talented crop of young rugby players.
