The unstoppable force what is the Pontefract U8’s continued to gather momentum as they put together yet another outstanding performance against a well organised Sheffield team.

With the game split into quarters to accommodate Ponte’s every growing squad it was yet again Jacob Dykes who opened the scoring with a lovely break away try. Pontefract’s defence was well tested with some skilful handling from the away side but excellent tagging from Seb Hinley and Lucas Brain halted Sheffield’s progress. Jamie Cook used his blistering pace to flank the defenders and finish nicely in the corner. Excellent multiple tags from Freddie Williamson prevented the South Yorkshire team from scoring which the Moor Laner’s were able to capitalise on with Hindley skilfully starting a passing move which Kairan Wilshire eventually finished.

Holly Roberts on debut was immediately into the thick of the action making a number of impressive tags before supplying a well weighted pass to Williamson who out paced the defenders to score. The latter quarters saw a strong defensive performance from Matthew Fradgley who marshalled the defensive line. Charlie Dean also shone with some brave goal line defence, standing strong despite playing an age grade above.

Alex Haigh also playing an age above finished a fantastic try displaying a clean pair of heels and great determination to reach the corner before the chasing defenders. Charlie Kneafsey, improving every week claimed a number of acrobatic tags and was involved in a lot of Ponte’s build up play which Cook was often the beneficiary of.

Pontefract then scored arguable their best try since first forming. Dykes whose vision and discipline to stay wide in the spaces is outstanding at such a young age and it was his initial break which started the move. Dykes offloaded to Williamson who released Wilshire who hit the ball at pace and had the speed to finish off a fantastic move which was well applauded by the appreciative crowd.

It was great to see so many youngsters enjoying their rugby at what is an exciting time for Pontefract’s junior section.
