Holly's champion spirit shines through

Morley Away 6th Jan

Morley away was the task in front of Pontefract’s U8’s as they returned to action following the festive period. But this fearless team showed no signs of rustiness as they fired out of the blocks at a rate of knots. Louis Addy impressed early on with some strong ball carries along with a fine solo try. Matthew Fradgley marshalled the defence making life very tough for the Morley attack. Chances were few and far between so when Jamie Cook saw a gap out wide following solid runs from Cody Turgoose and Freddie Williamson, it was imperative he scored. Using his pace along with his fierce determination, this was never in doubt. Debutant Jasper Lee-Wilby looked as if he’d been playing for years using his size and strength to great effect with powerful surges down the flanks. Further tries from Jayden Johnson, Addy and Williamson saw Ponty finish strongly and take the victory.

Game 2 against Stanley Rodillians was a less challenging encounter as Ponty ran out clear winners. There were some spectacular long range tries from Addy, Cook, Turgoose and Williamson. But it was the passing skills which captured the eye as players offloaded to supporting team mates who flooded onto the ball. Jayden Johnson displayed his silky-smooth running style as he glided through the defence to score a try richly applauded by the strong Pontefract support.

The final game was an all Pontefract affair due to the Moor Laners boasting such strong numbers. This certainly didn’t take anything away from the intensity on display. The passing between Jacob Dykes, Jacob McNally and Kairan Wilshire was fantastic and beyond their years. But it was Charlie Kneafsey who excited the crowd with some elusive running which bagged him 3 impressive tries. Johnson answered back immediately side stepping his way over the white wash. Holly Roberts then showed what rugby is all about. She received a blow to the face which forced her to leave the field but when asked if she wanted to stay off “I want to go back on” was the reply. On she went only to catch an extremely difficult pass before offloading to Addy to score. This is the attitude which makes the future so exciting for this group of outstanding youngsters.
