A Wall of Blue

Goole Home – 20th Jan 2019

A wall of blue summed up the day as a Pontefract’s U8’s team hosted Goole at a Moor Lane which was saturated with junior rugby. Even though Goole had the majority of possession, it came to nothing as the wall of blue stood strong.

Oscar McDermott put pressure on the Goole attackers all morning as he flew out of the defensive line to collect tag after tag. In attack he scored some memorable tries with his traditional Mc-Splash dive over the line. Not to be out done by his mate, Jasper Cartwright scored some lovely tries the pick of which was scored in game 2 displaying fine footwork to evade the defence.

Louis Addy played to his usual high standards with some outstanding last ditch try saving tags and in attack using his size and pace to great effect to score several tries. Freddie Williamson and Kairan Wilshire linked up superbly well, completing a drop off along with inside passes to completely bamboozle the defenders. They both finished off well worked tries but it was their defensive display which really caught the eye.

The Ponte team of Johnston, Leigh-Wilby, Fradgley, Cook and Kneafsey, played some great rugby in all 3 games. A regular feature was stiff defence, pressurising the Goole attack into errors with no way through. Jamie Cook, Jayden Johnston and Charlie Kneafsey capitalised and showed great pace with some great long distance break away tries. Jasper Leigh Wilby had his best game yet, in only his 3rd game. His effort and determination in defence was outstanding constantly hunting down defenders and never giving in. Matthew Fradgley backed up his good performance last week and had another strong game scoring a great try when he tip toed down the wing evading several defenders in the process.

Seb Hinley played a crucial leadership role and marshalled his team mates to victory. Scoring tries and commanding the defence showed just how much he has grown. Harry Williams backed up a good performance last week with another great display. Harry Evans improved once again with his support play a stand out. The Tag Machine what is Charlie Dean lived up to his nickname by leading the defence with his relentless enthusiasm. Charlie Simmons was constantly in the thick of the action with his no nonsense defensive approach stopping the Goole attack in their tracks.

This was a dominant display from Pontefract with every player showcasing their full range of skills in this constantly evolving team.
