Pontefract Under 12s took 19 lads Away to Wetherby for the first fixture of the 23/24 season. Playing two games of 20 mins, 10v10. The games started of slow in the first half of the first game and Pontefract were not rucking well compared a powerful Wetherby pack, also being turned over a few times. If it was not for a superb defence, a few tries would have been run in.
First season with 5 in the scrum was handled with great dominance, with Max Sutcliffe winning a couple against the head which was great to see.
Pontefract went two tries up in the first game with some great ball through hand plays, shipping it from one side of the pitch to the other to run in well worked team tries. Pontefract seemed to sit back after that in defence and to the annoyance of the coaches let in two we’ll worked Wetherby tries. Result 10-10
Special mention to Freddie Goldthorpe for putting his body on the line in making a great try saving tackle from a Wetherby penalty 5 meters out.
Second game
The first half was a dominant performance from Pontefract, running in 3 tries with Austin Kennelly running in a powerful try from 15 meters out to go over the white wash after breaking numerous tackles
The second half was a different affair, the team was great in defensive lines, only letting Wetherby in once from what was a great worked try. Unfortunately the game had to be called 5 minutes from the end due to unforeseen circumstances but all in all a great fixture and looking forward to the return at Moor Lane.
