Pontefract back on track with dominant display away at Wetherby

Pontefract we raring to go this weekend, on the back of a poor performance against Old Rishworthians the week before. The only major change was the omission of ever present prop Phil Lane who was unavailable this weekend.

The game ebbed and flowed in the first 10 minutes with Wetherby having the majority of possession but were not able to break down the strong defence of Pontefract headed up by, Sandwith, Scott and Fradgley. Wetherby were unable to break the Pontefract line, until the referee blew the whistle for offside from the Pontefract pack, Wetherby decided to take the 3 points and get on the score board. Pontefract were keen to make amends and quickly got possession from the kick off and after some strong running by Hill and Sant, the backs were able to open up the Wetherby defence and quick hands from Fawcett to Bacon, enabled the winger to outpace the opposition and score under the post after 12 mins, Callum Watt kicked the conversion to make it 7-3.
From the kick off Pontefract again were able to run the ball at the Wetherby defence slowly making up ground as each forward took a turn in running the ball up. From an line out at the halfway line, Ponte were able to take clean ball and a great line by Chris Sant but Wetherby on the back foot, from here back rower Jack Beddis, who had put a great effort in defence all game, burst the line and ran clear of the defence, also giving a great step to put the full back in all sorts of trouble, and finished off the try after a great 50m break, Watt missed the conversion, putting Ponte 12-3 up after 23 mins.

Great pressure again from Strong running from Jonny Hill and Rich Scott put Ponte in a dominant position in the Wetherby half, when they gave away a penalty for not moving away from the ruck, Callum Watt converted the penalty to make it 15-3 after 28 mins. Ponte Dominated in the lineout throughout the whole game with Fradgley and Sandwith stealing ball form the opponents from the off. An impressive line run by lock Niall Sandwith opened up the defence and enabled the Ponte backs to ease round the Wetherby backs for Stu Sanderson to score on his first game this season, Watt again converted on the stroke of Half time, making the score 22-3 at the break.

The second half saw Wetherby come at Ponte with renewed intent after the break, but Beddis, Sandwith, Sant, Fradgley and Scott were there to make sure nothing was getting past the Ponte line. More sustained pressure from Wetherby came in the form of their scrum, however Pontefract Front row of Chaba, Hill and Gumbs, held out the strong Wetherby scrum. Hill again had to move to prop, but the support of the pack managed to keep the Wetherby pack at bay. Eventually the penalty from Wetherby gave Ponte the time to clear their line from a Glen Boyd kick.

With Ponte out of their own 15m they were on the attack once again, when Hargreaves rolled back the years with a from a quick tap penalty, making a great break which opened up the field for Glen Boyd to run through to offload the ball to Fawcett for him to tear away and finish under the posts on 65mins, with Watt converting making the score 29-3.
With Ponte well and truly in the ascendency the pressure continued from the dominant line out and great running by Centre Ross Shand bursting holes in the midfield enabling the backs to put a few phases together to work to the corner. The ball was flashed back quickly to Boyd and then to Hill who through a long pass to Bacon for the winger to make a darting run down the wing, to then off load the ball to NO.9 Callum Watt, for him to fall a metre short of the line but good support play from Sant meant that Full back Richard Dedicoat could pick and dive over the line to score, again Watt converting his chance and with the kick bringing an end to the game finishing 36-3.

A much better performance from the team and to only concede one penalty puts the team back on track form the week before. Brilliant effort form the whole team, the defensive effort was massive throughout the forwards and backs. A well deserved week off in preparation for the next home game against Thornesians
