Match report Pontefract RUFC 1st.15 v Old Grovians RUFC 1st.15, game played Saturday 11.03.17 at Moor Lane, kick off 2.00pm. Pontefract carried off another important and deserved league win against gritty visitors Old Grovians. The home side preventing them getting over the try line and scoring seven tries to win the game 41-0. A mixed start gave the visitors an early opportunity to seize the initiative. However this was short lived as Jack Beddis ripped the ball away from the Grovians ball carrier to launch Pontes first attack, but the last pass disappointingly went to ground. At the first scrum Pontefracts pack held onto the ball and scrum half Callum Watts pushed the ball back for full back Liam Kay to make an excellent clearance kick. Pontefracts grafting hooker,
Jonny Hill turned the ball over and Glen Boyd pushed the ball out wide. Craig Fawcett raced into space and drew in the cover, off loading a neat inside pass to the supporting Matthew Bacon who went in for the try, Liam Kay goaled. 7-0. Play went back and forth as the Grovians tried to reply, Pontefract guilty of forcing play on occasions. A set move gave the impetus and good interplay from Craig Fawcett and Matthew Bacon set Fawcett on his run to the try line, needing to push off the visitors full back as he went over for the important early points. Liam Kay kicking the goal. 14-0. The try producing another spirited fight back from the visitors. A high tackle gave an opportunity for the Old Grovians to go for the penalty goal but the effort went wide. Prop Phil Lane drove the ball upfield and at the breakdown the visitors were penalised for not rolling away. Glen Boyd put in a raking kick to touch. Niall Sandwith took the ball off the top of the line out Callum Watts passed the ball on to Glen Boyd who changed the play and put in a long pass to winger Kieron Tucker to sail in for the try, no goal. Winger Richard Dedicoat managed to get on the end of high kick down field but the heavy conditions hampered the run on for a certain try. half time score 21-0. Pontefract made the changes, Will Story and Harry Cartwright coming on. Craig Fawcett going in for his second try following good phases of play. No goal. 26-0. Pontefract put the ball through multiple hands and changed the direction of play resulting in full back Liam Kay scoring an excellent try out wide.
31-0. Ponte continued the purple patch, lock Jonny Fradgley was pulled down short after a searing break. Harry McAllister came on and upped the go forward, Kieron Tucker going in for his second try. 36-0. Ponte continued to keep their foot on the peddle. Jack Beddis making a bullocking run and scrum half Callum Watts saw the space, took play to the open side and Matthew Bacon dived in the corner for his second try. Final score 41-0. A win for the 1sts to consolidate their position in the league, a highlight was young buck,Kieron Tucker scoring two tries for his club. Craig Fawcett and Matthew Bacon also scoring two tries each. Pontefract are at home in the semi final of the Yorkshire Shield on Saturday 18.03.17.
