Pontefract 64 Goole 7

Pontefract 64 Goole 7
It was a much anticipated return of league rugby to Moor lane and, after last weeks defeat and no formbook to look back on, the Ponte faithful did not know what to expect. There was no need to worry as the boys chalked up a record score in league games against a youthful Goole side, who were outclassed in every facet of the game.
The set piece functioned superbly all game and set the platform for the team to attack from anywhere and everywhere.
The scoring started in the first few minutes as Liam Kaye put in a speculative cross field kick into the hands of winger Ciaran Tucker who put evergreen second row Nellie Sandwith away on a break, who in turn fed player coach Craig Fawcett for an excellent score.
The next score soon followed as a dominant Ponte scrum gave flanker Callum Rogers the chance to dive over for a converted try.
The tries were coming thick and fast with Jack Beddis running rampant and setting up a position for another Fawcett try.
It was at this point Ponte lost back rower Tad Nyanjowa to a knee injury and second rower Brodie Matthews to a straight red card for a high tackle which most people felt merited a yellow at worst. Despite the forwards been a man down for the last hour, it was credit to the Ponte pack that the scrum was still going forward for the rest of the game, with Stuart Dedicoat been an able replacement for Tad.
Next up was a first try for fullback Richard Dedicoat, who combined with Tucker and scrum half Lyndon Metcalfe for a thrilling try on the counter from a long Goole kick into Ponte territory.
Even with a man down the tries were coming thick and fast with Beddis steamrollering his way over, followed by the most popular try of the day as the Goole winger forgot the ball was egg shaped and debutant young winger Lucas Ketteridge nipped in to take advantage of the opponents dithering.
This was followed by a try for our other youthful winger Tucker who sprinted half the length of the field after been put away by Fawcett, who was at his inspirational best all afternoon.
Credit to Goole, with the score at forty seven nil, they managed to break a seemingly impregnable Ponte defence to produce a fine converted try which gave them hope of a late push for a bonus point.
This was a false hope for them,as Ponte ended strongly as Metcalfe capped a strong performance with his first try for the club. Dedicoat grabbed his second from a quick tap as the Goole defence fell asleep, and the final score came from a beautifully executed backs move which put industrious centre Andy Coleman under the posts from a superb delayed pass from Kay.
All in all, a tremendous confidence boosting victory although stiffer tests are sure to follow. I must mention the big lads such as Ethan Potts, James Griffin, Josh Hough and Andy Fenton who maybe did not stand out so ,much in such an open game, but the dominance they provide up front week in week out provides the vital front foot ball for the team to function.. A special mention also to the general play and outstanding throwing in of hooker Tim Pickersgill.
