Early pressure not enough

Match Report Pontefract v Old Brods
Promising Start Stalled
Pontefract travelled to Hipperholme on Saturday looking to start their climb back out of the bottom of Yorkshire Division one, but earning points at Old Brodelians has never been an easy task for the Pontefract outfit against a team who know how to play their pitch and use their heavier pack to advantage.
Yet the first quarter of the game was all Pontefract , the pack gained the upperhand in the scrum and began to use their speedy backs to advantage. The centre pairing of Bacon and Fawcett began to make inroads into the Brodelians defensive line putting them under pressure. A fine break by Fawcett saw him through into space and when the cover came across he found Andy Fradgley on hand to take the pass and cut inside to score between the posts from 20 metres out. Andy Dean converted to put Pontefract 7 nil up.
A few minutes later it was Matthew Bacon who was on the score sheet. Good pressure by the Pontefract backs on their opposite numbers saw a hurried pass that was intercepted by Bacon who ran 50 metres taking the cover one way then the other to score between the posts the try being converted.
Two more chances came Pontefract’s way , Bacon again making a crash ball break through the Brod’s back line but his final pass to Richard Dedicoat just went to ground with an open line in the right hand corner. Moments later Jordan Gill was denied as his kick chase on the left wing just went into touch with the cover beaten.
On the 20 minute mark Old Brods started to get their pack together and began driving Pontefract back with some powerful rolling mails from the line out. To begin with the Pontefract Pack did well disrupting the drives even holding a man up over the line but gradually the pressure told and Brods got back into the game with a penalty and unconverted try. On the half hour another catch and drive gave Brods the lead with a converted try to make the score 15 to 14 . Pontefract were pinned in their 22 for much of the rest of the half and had to try and play off scraps and run out of defence.
Two more unconverted tries from driving mauls saw Brods to the half time break 25 -14 up.
The second half was all Old Brodelians who used the wind and slope well to keep Pontefract in their own half. Pontefract did not give up and the Pontefract backs prompted by Captain Glenn Boyd made telling inroads into the Brods half and another score looked on but a pass to Gill was knocked down with the line begging .
In the end the pressure told on the much lighter Pontefract pack and Brods ran out winners with a seven try talley 53 to 14.
