In gusting winds on the Huddersfield tops Pontefract 2nds were brought back to earth following last weeks win.
A series of spilled ball and needless penalties prevented the visitors building of an early solid platform which was needed to combat a well organised Huddersfield 2nd team. The home side benefitted from a tolerance with their fringing defense which resulted in difficulty getting over the gain line for the visitors. Huddersfield made the first score from a swirling down field kick, gaining possession and barging over the line. Pontefracts set piece play should have been a strength but long throws went wide in the wind. Tristan Hibbert at fly half tried to make the most of the sparse possession, Craig Potter and Ben Dunn-Birch getting over the gain line. The home side scored a further try, conversion and penalty goal before the visitors but together a determined set of phases of play, initially by James Heath changing the direction of attack and Luke Banfield collecting the ball and racing in the corner for the try. Pontefract had to work for scraps of good ball and Hudderfield made the most of their opportunities with good support play.
Half time score 27-5.
Pontefract competed for most of the 2nd half but as they tired Huddersfield broke the gain line at will and stacked up the points.
Final score 53-5.
Pontefract in the main worked hard but did not have the organisation of the opposition, the set piece did not keep possession and the fringing Huddersfield defense made it on occasions a one sided game. However lessons learned, Ponte 2nds will look forward to the return game.
Stand outs were Craig Potter, Josh Hough, Luke Banfield and Jonny Hill.
