Ponte too much for Barnsley

Match report Pontefract RUFC 2nds v Barnsley RUFC 2nds, game played 01.11.14. at Moor Lane, KO 2.15pm.

A poor start in windy conditions coughed up easy ball for the visitors who then took play into the Ponte half. However the home sides tackling produced the ball and the forwards made a series of drives, No.8 Jonny Hill took the pass on the burst, regained his feet from the half tackle and raced into the corner for the 1st try, no goal. 5-0. Initially Barnsley swamped the breakdown until Ponte organised and excellent scrum half Kyle Bailey found himself harassed. Grafter Phil Lane combined with Brownsword and Scoley and turned the ball over , hooker Calvert drove on and play went wide for full back Ben Dunn-Birch to find the defensive holes and sail through to score the try, Liam Kaye kicking the goal. 12-0. Center Toby Thorpe went in for the next try following a half break from fly half Liam Kaye. Liam Kaye goaled. 19-0. Pontes enthusiasm worked against them in the latter phases of the 2nd half, Joe Morgan and Harry McCallister making telling breaks and the solid tackling held out the visitors. half time score 19-0.

A good start for the home side as a loose ball from Barnsley was cleverley hacked a long way down the touch side by fly half Liam Kaye who then won the race for the touch down to score the try which he goaled. 26-0. Center Ross Shand scored the next try following, once again good all round teamwork. Full back Ben Dunn-Birch taking the ball deep into the oppositions half then taking the tackle to pass on to a supporting Shand who burst over the line. Liam Kaye kicking the goal. 33-0. Ponte lost their way for a spell and the visitors relentlessly battered the Ponte defence. A penalty opportunity was sufficient for the visitors prop to crash the try line and a supporting Chris Starkey scored the try which Chris Peel goaled. 33-7. In the final plays of the game Ponte again worked play in the visitors twenty two and fly half Liam Kaye used the opportunity to produce a solo effort to weave round the defense and score the try under the posts which he goaled. final score 40-7. Good early team play set the tone and then continuous enthusiasm plus talent earned the win. Ben Dunn-Birch was man of the match, scrum half Kyle Bailey and lock James Brownsword runners up, Liam Kayes outstanding play, scoring two trys and five goal kicks, a tally of 20 of the points in the team win.

Pontefract 2nds are in the pool for next weeks game. 08.11.14.
