Match report Pontefract RUFC 2nds v Yarbury RUFC 2nds. friendly game played Saturday 03.01.15. at Moor Lane kick off 2.15.pm.
Pontefract 2nds will have learned from a second half lull when a secure lead was allowed to slip away, opposition Yarnbury 2nds making
the most of extra ball play and playing with added vigour to score the inevitable points which allowed the win to go to the visitors.
Yarnbury fielded a competent side with key play makers and initially produced some fluid rugby. Pontefract surprised the visitors with forwards Stu Haynes, Jonny Hill and Josh Hough smashing their way through the visitors first up defense and creating an attacking initiative. Ten minutes on the clock,
Yarnbury moved the ball across field at speed, taking the opportunity for a wingers try in the corner which was converted 0-7. Ponte played hard in reply,
creating the opportunities but the last pass going to ground, Jonny Hill was held up twice over the line. The try came from the continuing pressure fly half
Richard Hossick putting the ball out wide and full back Ben Dunn-Birch went in for the well worked try. Ponte then conceded a sloppy try when loose home side ball was hacked into the clear by the visitors who had the support for the hooker to score the try which was goaled. 5-14. The home side then took the game by the scruff of the neck, maintaining possession and playing their best rugby. Scrum half Dan Wheater pushing the ball out, Martin Pashley
and Toby Thorpe making some telling breaks. Ben Dunn-Birch going in for his second try to move the score to 10-14. Yarnbury were on the back foot, Ponte once again using their ball time to good effect, fly half Richard Hossack creating and supporting for the next try which Toby Thorpe goaled 17-14.
Lock Niall Sandwith and Harry Mcallister combined prior to the break but the visitors held them out. half time score 17-14.
Ponte made a terrific start with another early score out wide Richard Hossick going round the corner to score his second try. no goal. The home side again looked in control as the changes were made. But Pontefract could not get the possession from the set piece and the game was turned on its head. Ponte gamely fought for the ball but Yarnbury had the guile to keep the ball tight and wait for the home side to tire with the doubling of the work rate. All players were a credit to the club but Yarnbury earned and snatched the win with three late well taken trys. Final score Pontefract 22 Yarnbury 31.
A good game for Pontefract 2nds following the long Christmas break both sides shook off plenty of rust. Ponte only kicking one goal, however the home side 2nds need to keep on track, play to their strengths and the wins will come again. Man of the match was Toby Thorpe who had a presence all through the game, stand outs Niall Sandwith. Stu Haynes, Jonny Hill, Harry Mcallister, Josh Hough and Martin Pashley. Pontefract 2nds are again in the pool for this coming weekends game, Saturday 10.01.15.
