Match report Pontefract RUFC 2nds v Wath RUFC 2nds, game played Saturday 29.11.14. at Moor Lane kick off 2.15pm. Pontefract 2nds faced stern
competitors following a pool arranged fixture against Wath 2nds. The visitors contained Ponte in last seasons encounter and claimed the spoils, therefore this game would be viewed with close interest to try and measure the young 2nds progress. As usual Wath fielded a big set of forwards with quality half backs and commenced play down the middle of the field. A few surprises were in store as big hitters James Brownsword, Stu Haynes, Rob Scoley and Martin Pashley made the tackles count. An early opportunity came the home sides way when full back Jordan Gill hoofed the ball down field, the visitors full back looked to have the ball in his control but sniping winger Callum Coleman prevented a clear run out and the ball was spilled, Callum pounced on the loose ball and scored the try which Liam Kay goaled. 7-0. Wath upped their game, challenging Ponte,s young bucks, gritty play initially worked against the visitors and Ponte benefitted from the penalties. Liam Kay kicking a penalty goal to to take the score to 10-0. Wath had a passage of possession from Ponte.s errors and worked their way to the line, number 11 wriggling over the line to score the visitors first try. no goal. 10-5. Ponte needed to get back into the visitors half and compete, a high kick from Jordan Gill bounced up into fly half Liam Kays hands, a change of direction wrong footed the Wath defence and Jordan Gill
took the pass to race in for the try. Liam Kay goaled. half time score 17-5. At the restart both sides had everything to play for, Ponte were yellow carded for off side. Pontes set piece worked well and got stronger as the the visitors big pack tired, lock Niall Sandwith organising the forwards. A laboured pass was
half a chance and Liam Kay made the interception to race away and score under the posts. Kicking the goal to take the score to 24-5. The more Wath tried to play the tight the home side forwards packed in the tackles, Jonny Hill, Aitor Gonzalez, Phil Lane and Scott Hawkins securing the middle of the field.
Hooker Martin Pashley kept possession at the scrum, scrum half Dan Wheater took play wide and full back Jordan Gill put in a terrific long pass to Tom Chester who raced past defenders to score the try which Liam Kay goaled. 31-5. A frustrated but never say die Wath tried in vain to get by the home sides rugged defence, a chip behind by the Wath scrum half was collected by Jordan Gill who raced in for the try which Liam Kay goaled. 38-5. Within minutes
Ponte,s forwards and backs created a further opportunity Jordan Gill broke clear and Tom Chester was on the end of the pass to score the try which Liam Kay goaled.45-5. Play continued and Pontes fly half Liam Kay switched play and weaved around defenders to run to the line and score the try which he goaled. final score 52-5. An emphatic win for the 2nds against a side that would have played to their strengths and shown no mercy if Ponte had wobbled.
Wath 2nds are a great set of players and a credit to their club. Man of the match was prop Rob Scoley for his relentless effort, a tower of strength, stand outs, Martin Pashley, Niall Sandwith, Tom Chester (two trys), and Jordan Gill (two trys). Liam Kay scoring 27 points, Jordan Gill creating a number of opportunities which stifled the opposition when they were at their strongest. Ponte 2nds are away to Hull 2nds Saturday 06.12.14. kick off 2.15pm
