Disappointing team performance with a put together pack

Match report Huddersfield 3rds v Pontefract 2nds, friendly game played Saturday 10.01.15. at Brewery Drive Huddersfield.
kick off 2.15 pm. Pontefract 2nds traveled away to Huddersfield, and followed in the footsteps of past players who enjoyed challenging and memorable encounters against the club at all levels. This encounter was a pool friendly game against Huddersfield 3rds. Pontefract had to make key changes but fielded a competent side. Huddersfield fielded a big pack and from the outset were obviously determined to play to their strengths. However after five minutes of
competitive play the home side caught the visitors in two minds, made the most of a foil and skipped through to score the first try which was converted. 7-0. Credit to Pontefract hooker Martin Pashleys side who immediately hit back, moving the ball around to make Huddersfield chase the play. The home side were penalised for coming in from the side at the ruck, Dan Wheater moved the ball into space with fly half Ross Shand passing the ball to Harry Mcallister
and Rob Jepson, the ball being pushed back inside to a galloping Aitor Gonzalez who scored the visitors first try. Ross Shands kick going wide 7-5. A similar
move within minutes rocked the home side as Aitor Gonzalez raced in for his second try which Ross Shand goaled. 7-12. Huddersfield played to their strengths and for the most kept the ball tight and Pontefract had to put in a massive effort to contain the opposition Jonny Hill and Niall Sandwith tackling themselves to a standstill. Encountering numerous pile ups and re starts. Pontefract were penalised at the breakdown and Huddersfield kicked to the corner, taking the ball at the line out and driving to the line for a well worked try, no goal. 12-12. Harry Mcallister took a great ball from the kick off and looked to be the through the gap but the heavy ground assisted the defense. Pontefract were lulled into the close type of play and were smothered in their carries of the ball. Huddersfield scoring a similar catch and drive try when Pontefract were penalised for trying to get the ball away at the breakdown. Half time score 17-12.
The second half didn,t produce any points for both sides, both sides putting in the tackles with a number of stops in play. Ponte had a couple of chances in the final phases of play Rob Jepson taking the ball within 10 metres of the try line and Joe Morgan going close. Final score 17-12. A tough game played in good spirit by both sides. Ponte being drawn into an unnecessary tussle when more of moving of the ball around could have won the game. Credit to the home side who stuck to their game plan. Man of the match for Pontefract was Rob Jepson for his overall play, Stand outs, Aitor Gonzalez for his two trys,
Harry Mcallister continues to improve, Martin Pashley,in the thick of it. Pontefract 2nds are away at Doncaster Pheonix next week Saturday 17.01.15. kick off 2.15 pm.
