First win of 2015 for Ponte against a battling Knottingley seconds
Match report Pontefract RUFC 2nds v Knottingley RUFC 2nds, game played Saturday 31.01.15. at Moor Lane
kick off 2.15 pm. Pontefract 2nds welcomed near neighbours Knottingley 2nds in a pool friendly. The home side loaning
a mix of players to the visitors, Matt Hargreaves, Josh Hough and Ben Jones which provided for, in the early encounters, challenging and uncompromising rugby. Play went back and forth in wind swept cold, but where their is intent, playable conditions. The first points finally coming from Rich Dedicoat at full
back who slipped by the tackler and into space and to then pick up the supporting Dan Wheater who went in for the first try which was goaled by Liam Kay. An interception produced the second try from newcomer winger Jack Briers who spotted the opportunity and raced away to score, Liam Kay kicking the goal. Half time score 14-0. Back row flanker Scott Hawkins turned play away from the visitors with a good steal and running 20 metres to score his try, no goal. Pontefract moved play out wide as the forwards tired and again Rich Dedicoat read the signs and sold a dummy pass to glide into space, scrum half Dan Wheater on hand to take the final pass on go over the line for the try which lock Joe Morgan goaled.26-0. The final try of the game came from centre
Rob Jepson who threatened all game and defended well, finally getting the opportunity by latching onto a neat pass from Danny Wheater to burst into space and score the try which Ben Jones goaled.
Final score 33-0. A good game which was played in good spirit, both teams a credit to their clubs, Pontefract had the ball carriers out wide and the robust defenders in the middle, however there was a duration before either side scored. Man of the match for Pontefract was Scott Hawkins in the forwards and Rich Dedicoat in the backs, Scrum half Dan Wheater always around throughout and scoring two trys. Pontes loan players played well for the opposition and were appreciated for their efforts by the visitors captain. A good day for rugby. Pontefract 2nds are away Saturday 07. 02.15. at Hull Ionians 3rds.
