Rampant Ponte win 60-0

Match report Pontefract RUFC 2nds v Cleckheaton 3/4ths. Game played Saturday 14.11.15. At Moor Lane, kick off 2.15pm.
Pontefract 2nds arranged a friendly with a mixed team from accomplished local club Cleckheaton. The changing autumn weather consisting of persistent rain and a biting wind tried to put a dampener on the proceedings but both teams adjusted to the conditions from the outset and played some good rugby.
Gritty Cleck preferred the tight play and Pontefract’s fly half Liam Kay was quick to spot the space out wide and an early try from hooker Andy Smith got points on the board for the home side. Although the visitors battled hard Pontefract sensed the opportunity and overall good support play produced tries from Josh Beecher, Dan Wheater, Luke Beecher,Matt Williams and Richard Hossack with goals from Liam Kay. Half time score 36-0.
Pontefracts tackling stint in the first half held the visitors out and fresh legs for the home side in the second half would again test the visitors resolve. Creditably Cleckheaton battled hard and never gave way at the rucks and mauls. But Pontefract made the most of their opportunities whenever they found a way through the defence. Hooker Andy Smith completing a hat trick of tries in the second half with Tom Chester also scoring. Liam Kay kicking the goals. Final score 60-0. A one sided result, however the visitors were relentless in their effort and the game was played in good spirit but Pontefract’s fire power on the day was in abundance. Andy Smith was man of the match, and stand outs were Ross Shand and Jim Cain. An ever improving Pontefract 2nd team squad are away to Scunthorpe next week 21.11.15
