Match report pontefract 2nd team by joe Joe Perkins
Morley have transpired to be the most successful side in recent clashes between these two teams, but with a strong Pontefract side playing in conditions suiting they're fast style of play, it set an interesting prospect.
From the outset pontefract dominated in the scrum with the front five proving too powerful for the Morley pack. This prowess in the forwards was matched by solid hands in the backs. In attack, bacon smokeddefenders with raw pace before offloading to josh Beecher to score in the corner. The outside back were supplied with high quality ball all day by distribution from mattison and Kay who shared the standoff role. Solid carries and ball retention in the forwards was a marked improvement on last week and set a firm foundation for the team to go forward and challenge the Morley team. The teams went at each other throughout the game and it was a close contest.
Outstanding defence from Danny Wheater mom and Ross Shand, helped to keep Ponte in it. Captain Scott Hawkins was like a ferret digging and foraging throughout the game constantly pinching the ball back from Morley posession. This was despite the Morley fullback, A. Mullet, punching holes through the pontefract defence and Morley working well as a team to threaten to pontefract line on numerous occasions. Although Morley were in the lead for the majority, the match was tighter than an astronaut's helmet. The final try for pontefract proved decisive and was the finest of the game, a cross field kick went through the hands of the outside backs and eventually dotted down in the corner. This try secured the victory for pontefract with the final score 20-19.
