Unlucky 2s lose out

Match report Pontefract RUFC 2nds v Scunthorpe RUFC 2nds friendly game played Saturday 05.12.15. at Moor lane, kick off 2.15pm. Pontefract 2nds went into the pool for this
game and Scunthorpe 2nds agreed to travel following the clubs recent encounter when Ponte 2nds put in a commendable effort against a more higher ranked side. Pontefract new what to expect. The weather elements had an immediate effect and contributed to an early try from the home side. The gusting wind picked up the kick off ball and turned its direction around. The re start from a scrum looked like it would work against Ponte but a good push and a fumble with harressment from scrum half Matt Hargreaves turned possession, fly half Rich Hossack fly hacked the ball on and he visitors full back had to kick the ball into touch to relieve the pressure. A good throw from hooker Jonny Hill set up the catch and drive and the pack marched over the line for Hill to score the try. no goal. Scunthorpe looked stunned but a surprised home side then lost focus and coughed up a double penalty and the big visitors forwards barged over the line for the try which was goaled. A mis understanding on the flank defence allowed Scunthorpe in for their quick second try. 5-14. Pontefract rallied and held onto possession to send number 8 John Fragley over for the homesides 2nd try, no goal. Scunthorpe used the gusting wind to good effect and kept pushing the ball back into the home sides half which doubled the effort. Slipped tackles allowed the visitors in for two more trys prior to half time. half time score 10-26. Pontefract showed glimpses of their potential but robust tackling from the visitors often prevented 2nd and 3rd phase play. The visitors requested uncontested scrums where Ponte had been strong. Good drives from Jack Beddis,Rich Hossack, John Fradgley and James Griffin got half breaks but lack of support and a fringing defence negated the effort. Pontefract had more possession in the 2nd half but a spill gifted a try to the visitors however Pontefract had the last word with a well worked try, centre Ross Shand sailed in for the try which was goaled.final score 17 -33. Pontefract played well for most of the game, all available players got on the field of play, Scunthope used the elements better in the first half and opted for a tough defence in the second half when Ponte had the weather on their side. Man of the match for Pontefract 2nds was Jack Beddis, stand outs Rich Hossack and John Fradgley. Pontefract 2nds are away to Moortown seconds Saturday 12.12.15. kick off 2.15pm.
