Match report, Pontefract RUFC 2nd team v Selby RUFC 2nd, friendly game played Saturday 03.09.16. at Sand Lane Selby, kick off 14.30 hours.
In difficult playing conditions Pontefract 2nds pulled off the first match, first win of the new season. Travelling to Selby with a team consisting of experienced and developing players. From the kick off both sides matched each other, however Selby picked up from a visitors error, kept possession and eventually scored. Pontefract rallied and kept play in the forwards, stalwart prop Colin Swift being driven over the line to score the try. Both sides rang the changes to allow players to get some game time. Half time score 5-5. Pontefract moved the ball more and varied play in heavy rain. Tries coming from good interplay by Andy Coleman and Josh Blackmore. Fly half Richard Hossack kicking the all important goals and keeping long periods of play in the Selby half. A key difference which effected the final result. A determined Selby managed to break the shackles and score a well worked try in the corner. However Ponte managed to pin them back in their half and should have scored. Final score Selby 10 Pontefract 19. A good game played in excellent spirit, both teams being a credit to their clubs. Josh Blackmore was man of the match for Ponte 2nds, Andy Coleman and Colin Swift standouts. Pontefracts overall team play and tackle count having a big effect on the game. The junior players receiving plenty of support and encouragement from the senior players.
