Pontefract RUFC 2nds V Ossett 1st

Pontefract RUFC 2nds invited Ossett 1st 15 to Moor Lane for a friendly following Pocklington 2nds being unable to muster a full team for the merit game. The encounter turned out to be end to end rugby which produced an enjoyable game for the players and a spectacle. Ossett set the pace with flowing and aggressive rugby which initially flustered the home side. The fluidics of home 2nd team rugby were initially no match for a cohesive Ossett side. The visitors had two tries on the board before Pontefract gelled and got the ball out to bustling winger Dave Findlay who rounded the cover to score near the post, converting his own try. 7-14. Ponte were caught napping again when Ossett used the chip through to find space and inadequate cover. 7-21. Dave Findlay went over again, no goal. 12-17. The visitors cut loose and chipped behind to pick up and score the try which was goaled. Pontefract had found the way through but continued relentlessly to try and win the mid field battle. Eventually attacking the oppositions flanks, Wing Dave Findlay bustling his way over for his hat trick of tries.
Half time score 17-28.
A cross kick and a slow response allowed Ossett in for a try which was goaled following the break. 17-35. Pontefract were stung into action and competed to get the upper hand. The home side putting in a very competitive final quarter, Andy Coleman going over for two tries, Dave Findlay kicking the goal for the extras. 31-35. In the final phases of the game Ponte put in a massive effort, the forwards hanging onto possession, fly half Andy Coleman putting in a clever chip through but the support players were held in the ruck and the Ossett winger took the safety first option turning his back on the late chasers and hoofed the ball out of play. Final score 32-35. Stand out was Dave Findlay, Callum Watts settled in at scrum half and the sides young bucks will have learned from the experience. For the most a challenged team effort. A trio of expensive slip ups and the goal kicks effected the outcome but a close result. Best of luck to Ossett who are a committed and capable team who enjoy and play the game hard. A credit to their club. Pontefract 2nds are away to Huddersfield YMCA. 10.02.18.
