Pontefract 2xv 55 - Leeds Medics 5

Pontefract 2xv 55 - Leeds Medics 5

A strong home side hosted a very young and enthusiastic Medics team who took no time to get into their expansive style attempting to run Pontefract ragged. Under early pressure the hosts were forced to defend fiercely to repel multiple phases, Hawkins, Morgan and Dedicoat held the line in a frantic start to what promised to be an exciting afternoon of rugby.
Pontefract weathered the storm and moved menacingly up field through a series of forward drives led by the excellent Fenton. An awesome scrum produced a penalty that was rewarded with the opening score for Fenton as the pack marched over from the resulting line out. This has been a potent weapon for an organised and powerful pack all season. 5-0
With the set piece completely dominant it gave the youthful backs an opportunity to show their potential, it looked like it was going to be a long day for the visitors. Despite some classy work from Metcalf, Harris and Hossack Pontefract couldn’t extend the lead as the Medics determined defence stood strong, passionately swarming every break down with great effect. With the visitors heavily out gunned up front they were living on scraps but constructed an excellent try to level the game 5-5
Pontefract reverted to their power game but failed to grasp the official’s interpretation of some of the laws becoming frustrated so losing all shape and cohesion. A scrappy period followed until Pontefract ‘rebooted’ and regained some semblance of composure. The half backs, Harry and Hossack gave Pontefract some direction that resulted in Fentons second score after some great work by all the team including some creative touches from Metcalf, Harris and Copley. 10-5.
As the interval approached Metcalf conjured a moment of opportunistic magic to give the home side some breathing space at 17-5. Goaled by Max Copley

The medics regrouped and Briskly started the second half, continuously frustrating the rampant home side who were using the battering ram at every opportunity to re establish their dominance. Jimbo , Hill and Anderson gave a solid platform for the bullocking Fenton and Burgess to continue to skittle the meds defence before the backs launched a series of blistering attacks. The meds competed at every phase but were finally out muscled when Cameron blasted over to open the flood gates,22-5.
Hill and Cameron combined to forces 5m scrum from which veteran captain Scott Hawkins scampered over to extent the lead 29-5.
Fenton continued to smash his way up field giving Greeny a chance to show his pace and screech in for a converted try. 36-5
Pontefract continued to play some great rugby as Sam Macha finished a sweeping move to score another ‘team try’ that delighted the home supporters 41-5
Directly from the kick off, Harry
collected superbly to sprint away before feeding the ubiquitous Jonny Hill to score his customary try. 48-5
The final score came after a clever break from Totty to allow Max Copley to dummy his way over for a try he duely converted. 55-5
A dominant display of pace and power against spunky opponents who, to their credit, gave everything they had and contributed to a thrilling game of rugby. Unfortunately, a good big one will always beat a good small one.
A great all round team effort, scoring nine tries by eight different players.
Fenton was outstanding throughout taking the award of MOM.
Linden Metcalf exuded class and Cameron Burgess made a great impact in defence and attack.
Pontefract will need to continue this great form if they are to overcome a very difficult fixture at Moortown next week.

A word of advice……
There is no offence for pushing too hard BUT if the official says there is…………………THEN THERE IS!!!!!
