Pontefract 2xv 6 – 40 Doncaster Phoenix 2xv
Pontefracts unbeaten run came to an abrupt end when an excellent Phoenix side gave a very impressive display of pace and power to overwhelm a much changed youthful home side. The experienced Doncaster side dominated the set piece putting the home pack under great pressure forcing a great defensive effort from the kick-off. With five changes in the pack it was always going to be a tall order to repel high flying Phoenix who were also unbeaten going into his game. Two Kay penalties kept Ponte in touch with the visitors who led 6-15 at the interval.
Pontefract resisted bravely and were unlucky not to add to their tally as several oppertunities were squandered after some determined approach play by Wheater, Dun Birch, Jones and Townend. However, the second half developed a pattern of Doncaster scoring long range tries after great kick chases and easy turn overs.
Despite a courageous effort from Hill, Hough, Haines and Townend the home side surrendered territory and possession far too easily allowing the visitors to run out comfortable winners 6-40.
Pontefract showed great spirit throughout and will hopefully learn from this defeat as they continue their league campaign next Saturday when they entertain Hull Ionians in a match that will again test their character.
