Pontefract 42- 0 Malton and Norton

Moor Lane hosted the Malton and Norton team in cold, changeable weather conditions. The reverse fixture saw Pontefract travel away and gain the win, they were hoping to replicate this result.
Beddis Claimed the kick off for Pontefract and proceeded to dispatch a defender in his path, his strong carrying continued throughout the game and set a standard for the team. Both teams missed early attempts at goal following penalties, with Beecher’s attempt for Pontefract being described as ‘potnetnially the first time he has ever kicked a ball’. The Pontefract pack worked as one moving the opposition backwards consistently and providing a sturdy platform for the team going forward.
Beddis bagged three tries for the game this was just reward for consistently breaking the malton defence, he was like a wasp constantly pestering and stinging the malton side. Matthews and Hawkins, the other back rowers, mathed his enthusiasm throwing their bodies around like bulls in a china shop. Phil lane also grafted selflessly through the game.
Man of Match Stuart dedicaot managed to dot down with the backs interlinking and questioning the defence; he matched this with a strong allround performance tackling rucking and supporting. He was closely matched by Josh Blackmore who frequently skipped around the defence and stretched them. Rich Hossack directed play from 10 and also made line breaks.
The final try of the first half came from a Pontefract scrum where Hawkins picked, drew in defenders then passed to Danny Wheater in space who made a break. Wheater then passed on to Bacon on the wing. The only way to describe Bacons finish was golden syrup slowly dribbling off a spoon, several spectators on the sideline were walking at a higher speed. The first half ended 35 – 0 to Pontefract.
Pontefract looked dangerous in the second half with the backs putting together several potent moves. The omnipotent Blackmore made yet another break and generously gave Beddis the ball to score the final try. Chances came where dummy runners were used to create space out wide for Wheater who seemed guaranteed to score. Instead of simply passing back inside to Jose, he decided to take the tackle, seemingly ruining the attack like burnt toast. Pontefract managed to recover possession and after a few phases put together another back move which looked like Wheater passed to Beecher to score, however the final pass was deemed forward and the try was ruled out. Wheater would be more proud of an ingrown toenail than that particular 5 minute spell . A strong overall performance from Pontefract saw them romp home to a 42 – 0 win, many thanks to Malton for making the Journey over to Pontefract. By joe Perkins
