Pontefract faced hull Ionians in a league fixture that would hopefully prove to be a competitive game. Both teams turned up wi the bare 15 and Ionians would lose players through the course of the match due to their second team needing more men, mid way through the match.
Rich Dedicoat, normally a winger, started the game at 7. Other second team debutants in the pack included David Webb and Aaron Lloyd in the second row and Ben Robinson at 6. Hull's forwards struggled to resist The beefy ponte pack in the scrum. This provided strong foundations for the pontefract backs to Breach the hull line. An industrious performance from Hargreaves at scrum half was rewarded with a try following some sharp thinking from a quick tap penalty. This followed his previous try, which was the final leap over the line after incessant pressure from the pontefract forwards.
Dedicoat and Hawkins tackled tirelessly throughout the game stopping strong carries from the Ionians forwards. In the second half the pontefract forwards attracted the Ionians in towards the ruck like wasps to jam, the ball was then swung wide and hossack slipped through to score pontefracts third try. The final try came from champagne rugby: forwards and backs interlinking, the move culminated with Hargreaves passing the ball to Ben Dunn birch who ran a fantastic support line and scored under the posts. The final score was 26-20 with hossack converting three tries and hull missing all their kicks.
