Match report Sheffield Medics RUFC 2nds v Pontefract RUFC 2nds. Game played Saturday 18.11.17. at Sheffield. Kick off 2.15pm. Enthusiasm, commitment and continuing overall team effort propelled Pontefract 2nds towards the win over a relentless, unforgiving and effervescent Sheffield Medics 2nds. Pontefract made changes to the pack but fielded a similar three quarters line. Adam Edwards going to scrum half. The visitors made a great start and moved the ball around but were undone as some how the Medics managed to free up the ball in the tackle. Prop Dave Gilbert making surging charges over the gain line inspired early play. Scrum half Adam Edwards scored an early try, pulling the defence out wide and then chipping the ball over head towards the defending full back who was caught in two minds. A subsequent defender spill and attacker pick up enabling the score. Andy Coleman kicked the goal. Both packs wanted to seize the initiative and play dwelled around the tight until Adam Edwards spun the ball out wide, Andy Coleman and Ross Shand in on the move, Ollie Jameson twisting and forcing himself over the line to score an excellent try. No goal. The Medics fitness and relentless play propelled them along and this created their first try. Opting to attack the blind side and make the most of some weak tackles to score the try which was converted. Half time score 7-12. The home renewed their effort as Pontefract again could not hold on to good ball and attack was turned into a stretched defence resulting in the Medics diving in the corner for for their second try. No goal. 12-12. Pontefract responded with a period a determined play, Scott Hawkins, Lee Bennett and Billy Coleman leading the way. Full back Liam Wiggins coming into the line and evade the final tackles to score the try. Andy Coleman kicked the goal. 12-19. Pontefract continued to compete in the scrums, line outs and rucks. Dave Webb, Martin Pashley and Dave Gilbert having their hands full against the relentless medics. Lewis Hibbert coming on at hooker. Returning from injury,
lock Leo Harrison supporting a half break from fly half Andy Coleman and scoring the try to stretch the visitors lead. No goal. 12-24. The home side started to get the 50/50 decisions and this renewed their vigour. Centre Steve Lowrie found space but the final tackle pulled him down. However Ponte going forward, Andy Coleman made the half break and prop Dave Gilbert crashed over for the try. No goal. The Medics predictably battled to the final whistle keeping Pontefract at it and making the most of their late opportunities. Final score 12-29. Scott Hawkins wrestled the opposition all afternoon, prop Dave Gilbert showed his worth and a welcome return try from Leo Harrison. A great away win for the 2nds.
