Pontefract RUFC 27 - Sheffield Tigers 12

Match report Pontefract RUFC 2nds v Sheffield Tigers 2nds. Game played Saturday 09.12.17. at Moor Lane, kick off 2.15pm. On a bitterly cold winters day, Pontefract 2nds pulled off a much deserved team win over league leaders Sheffield Tigers 2nds who had not lost a league game this season. Pontefract made the better start with early opportunities but cold hands gave the visitors a breathing space and some possession of the ball. The Tigers made a half break Billy Coleman Lee Bennett and Darren Smith made the tackles but good off loads maintained the momentum, fly half Andy Coleman making the final tackle as the visitors lock skidded towards the line to claim the try which was converted. 7-0. The visitors looked to have found a way through the home sides defence but a tenacious Pontefract refused to be put on the back foot. The home side pack more than held their own against a bigger set. Leo Harrison took the ball off the top at the line out, Andy Coleman pushed the ball wide, Ollie Jameson and Rob Smith kept up the momentum and Dave Findlay pushed off the tackler and evaded the final cover to score a key try for the home side and kick the goal. 7-7. Pontefracts forwards of Webb, Hibbert and Hawkins kept at it in the tight and again the ball was moved into space, Andy Coleman making the half break, James Jenkins kicked through and won the race for the ball, picking up to score the try and stretch the home sides lead. Dave Findlay kicking the goal. 14-7. Andy Fenton and Tom Hough thundered into the visitors defence and regularly got over the gain line. However against the run off play a loose pass put the home side under pressure and a poor clearance allowed the Tigers to set up an attack against a turning defence and the visitors centre went over for the try in the corner. No goal. Half time score 14-12. The Tigers uncompromising style was matched at the re start by a determined to win home-side. Good half back play took the visitors defence one way and then the other, Jack Beddis made the half break from the scrum and flying winger Adam Edwards took the crash ball to score a well worked try out wide. No goal. 19-12. Dave Findlay scored his second determined try from a half break by Andy Coleman. 24-12. Brodie Mathews made a turn over and Ethan Potts picked up. Scott Hawkins drove on. The Tigers were penalised for a high tackle. Dave Findlay kicking the penalty goal. 27-12. An enthusiastic Pontefract kept moving the ball around to keep up the home side momentum. However the gritty visitors caught the home side ball carrier isolated, turned the ball over and the winger scored out wide. No goal. 27-17. The Tigers went for the a further try but good position al kicking pushed them back and the tackles caused a spill, Pontefract finishing the game in possession. Final score 27-12. Once again a great team win against the visitors who definitely came to win. Pontefract fronted up and fought for the ball and overall earned the win on the day. Dave Findlay was man of the match playing his best game this season. The Coleman brothers lead from the front in attack and defence. Scott Hawkins played a Captains game but overall a team win The result being an early Christmas present for the club.
