Match report Thorne RUFC 2nds v Pontefract RUFC 2nds. Game played Saturday 20.01.18. at Thorne. KO 2.15 pm.
Pontefract 2nds were hungry for some rugby and had returned to full strength, subsequently setting off like an express train against the home side Thorne 2nds ,who fielded as expected a big and experienced side. At the outset the visitors scum half Linden Metcalfe took play left and then right, stretching the cover to force an offside penalty. Brodie Mathews took the ball off the top at the line out and quick hands fed wing Adam Edwards who side stepped the defenders to go in at the corner for the try. No goal. 0-7. A well supported effort created a quick scoring opportunity with Rob Smith,Ross Shand, Josh Blackmore, Adam Edwards all very much involved to keep the ball alive, Andy Coleman evading the final tacklers to
crash over for the try. No goal. 0-10. The home side were frustrated and unable to hold onto possession as the visitors put in the tackles in particular Lee Bennett, Daz Smith, Andy Fenton alongside continually freeing up the balll.up. Live wire scrum half Linden pulled off a ball interception quickly turning the defence into attack and fly half Andy Coleman took the pass to race 40metres for the try. 17-0. Josh Blackmore and Billy Coleman going in for tries prior to the break. Half time score 0-31. Thorne tried to make all the play in the tight and repeatedly smashed and crashed into the visitors solid defence when in possession but at this stage of the game just couldn’t get anywhere. Pontefract making the most of their ball possession.
Playing conditions deteriorated in the second half and the home side held onto more ball in the heavy underfoot conditions. Ponte were momentarily drawn into the grapple but good positive leadership from Scott Hawkins, John Fradgley and Billy Coleman produced some quality turn overs to keep the visitors on the front foot. Dave Webb, Lewis Hibbert, Liam Hawkins and Toby Field battled all afternoon against the heavier Thorne front row.
Persistence payed off and Ponte got back on the the front foot with some excellent support play from Rob Jepson and Liam Wiggins, Richard Hossack scoring a hat trick of tries. Final score 0-46. A game won from full blooded commitment, enthusiastic team work ,along with united encouragement. Scott Hawkins gluing the team together. Some excellent cameo performances from the young bucks of the team. Linden Metcalfe, Toby Field, Brodie Mathews, Adam Edwards. Sportingly Adam Edwards did a spell for the home side following injuries. Pontefract 2nds are in the pool for next weeks game.
