Huddersfield RUFC Falcons v Pontefract RUFC

Match report, Huddersfield RUFC Falcons v Pontefract RUFC, game played Saturday 29.09.18. at Lockwood Park, kick off 3.0pm. Pontefract 2nds needed to use an abundance of gritty play and all their available fire power to win a closely contested match against a strong, well organised Huddersfield Falcons side. The visitors in front at the break 3-7 and a mighty Pontefract fight back grabbed the win 11-12.
Pontefract competed from the off against an aggressive home side who wanted to seize the initiative and then stack up the points. Ponte matched them in the pack starting out with Josh Hough, Danny Owen and Ethan Potts in the front row. A few clearance kicks did not find their mark and the home side thundered back at the Ponte defensive line which held and was solid in all areas. Harry McAlister , Charlie Handson, Stuart Dedicoat and Ollie Jamieson suppressing the home side three quarter efforts. Fifteen minutes gone and Prop Josh Hough was penalised for being too competitive at the ruck. No goal. Pontes flanker Tad picked up from Ross Shand and got over the gain line, Huddersfield rushed up to stop the attack and lost their composure offering a number of penalties. Dan Wheater took a quick take of the penalty and spread the ball wide, second row Will Story crashing over the line for the try. Ross Shand kicked the goal. Pontefract continued to compete Jonny Fradgley, Leo Harrison and young Mathews in the thick of it which subsequently forced a frustrated home side to up their effort prior to the break. A loose pass went to ground in the closing seconds of the half and was compounded when players Ponte players became offside. Huddersfield kicking the penalty goal. Half time score 3-7. Pontefract brought on fresh legs for the re start. Pontefract’s Scott Hawkins, Kyle Morley and Dave Webb had to fight for the ball in the second half as the breakdowns continued to be fairly controlled. A kick through was picked up by the home side, the visitors flank defence rushed up but failed to connect and the home side worked the opportunity well to put their winger into the corner for the try which snatched the lead from Pontefract. No goal 8-7. Pontefract needed to re group and suffered for a spell when the play was unorganised in the middle but a cool head from Rich Scott and co won the day. Ponte held their own in the set play and won a couple against the head, then after winning the ball in the scrum Huddersfield put in a second effort and disrupted Pontes front row. Another penalty took the score to 11-7. Pontefract showed their true grit as the home side thought they had it in the bag. Andy Fenton drove in and sucked in the up front tackles, quick ball from Dan Wheater and excellent forward support play from the forwards(everybody involved)turned the cover and gave centre Harry McAllister the half chance to bustle his way over the line to score the try. No goal. 11-12. The game was so tight both sides were guilty of over committing. Latterly Ponte were penalised for a late tackle out wide and Huddersfield went off their feet at the ruck to try and force a turnover. Ross Shand kicked the ball out of play and the referee blew the whistle to end the game. Final score 11-12. A closely contested but enjoyable game, both sides a credit to their club, neither side giving an inch. Man of the match for Pontefract was Tad for his bullocking runs, excellent support play and competitive at the rucks. Stand outs, Josh Hough was a thorn in the side all afternoon and ran himself to a standstill. Ross Shand, the man in the middle and in the thick of it.
The win was a team effort, Pontefract up against an experienced and capable side on a hot afternoon when a strong bench tipped play and the result towards the visitors.
