Pontefract Host touring Ely

Pontefract 17s hosted a tour game for Ely Rufc on Easter Sunday.

It was Ely that started out the stronger, eager for posession and keen to disrupt .
Their eagerness was rewarded when their right wing managed to stay in field by the skin of his teeth to score in the corner. From the restart their left wing handed off 3 lastlustre tackles to score out wide again. Next their forwards took charge and scored nearer the posts to make it 17 nil after 25 mins.

A that stage it looked like a white wash and Ponte had simply not turned up.
Harsh words behind the sticks seemed to rally the troops and the lads went back to basics. Lewis Hibbert and Leo Harrison started to make the hard yards round the fringes before Callum Watts fed his three quarters for Joe Threlfall to cut some lovely lines through the defence.

He went under the sticks from one such move to unselfishly hand the ball on to Watts to score and goal.
The 2nd he scored himself from a well angled run through the back line also goaled by Watts to make the half time score a respectable 14v17.

The 2nd half was altogether different with both teams gaining some shape and it was end to end but the decisive try came from the hard word of the forwards, Bailey and Brodie Matthews and Lewis Hibbert once again.

They set up the platform and then swift and accurate handling by the backs put Liam Tennant away in the corner.

The last 20 minutes were a joy to watch with both sides giving everything and the final score ended 19v17 to Pontefract in a very entertaining game.

MoM went to Captain Callum Watts who marshalled his troops well and put his body on the line when it mattered.
