Pontefract under 14s took to the field for the first time this season taking on a Huddersfield side that had already had three games under their belt. It was new look side and are determined to play good rugby, Huddersfield certainly knew it was going to be tough game. Pontefract’s defence was resolute in the first 15 minutes as Huddersfield tried time and time again to break it down but with fantastic cover defence from Will Smith and Ben Mason helping George Marks and Noah Cooper keeping a strong wing attack at bay. Midway through the first half a rampaging run from the Huddersfield forwards finally broke the Pontefract defence to score the first try then followed by the conversation made it 0-7. Pontefract responded with a strong run from Louis Wan who was hauled down just metres short, Ben Mason also came close but he was just nudged into touch. The second half saw Pontefract fall further behind, good pressure from the kick off saw Huddersfield forwards score another close range try taking the score to 12-0. Pontefract dug deep and the pack started to take control with some great scummaging from Wan, Woodfield and Captain Tom Webley, this paid off when clean ball allowed scrum half Ethan Grant to send Longstaff into space which inturn put Ben Mason in space to beat one defender and score. Grant was unlucky not to land a difficult convertion but Pontefract were clawing their way back into the game at 5-12. Second rows Marshall Brow and Dylan Fairburn worked tirelessly making tackle after tackle but it was Kier Woodfield that scored pontefract’s second try after been driven over the line by Jamie Jex and Webley. At 10-12 Pontefract felt like the were able steal the game from Huddersfield with great jinking runs from Alfie Abbott with other notable contributions from Bailey, Goodall and Miller. Into the last 5 five minutes Pontefract were feeling the pace of the game and one final push saw Huddersfield take the final score winning the game 17-10. With such a great effort displayed it won’t be long before Pontefract are into winning ways.
