Pontefract u14s travelled across the Pennines to Oldham and it proved to be a successful trip, coming from behind to win 15-20. Pontefract took an early lead from a neat line out move where Prop Tom Webley broke the Oldham defence only to slip the ball to his Captain Kier Woodfield who crashed over in the corner, giving Pontefract an early lead. This was a wake call for Oldham who started to punch holes in Pontefract's defence, physically bigger Oldham started to bring their big runners into the game and this tested Ponefract's defence. Early on Oldham controlled the ruck and the breakdown, Pontefract failed to compete and this gave Oldham extended periods dominating the possession. It was long before Oldham got on the outside to score a very good try from their own half. Oldham went on to score twice more but it wasn't through a lack of effort in defence, Jex and Ethan Grant working hard to stop a more strong running from Oldham. As the first half progressed Pontefract began to control possession after some good tactical kicking from Longstaff, Pontefract forced Oldham into long periods of defending only for Alex Wilson to crash over with one of his trade mark runs. This was the turning point for Pontefract where they began to play with more confidence and vigour. The second half saw Pontefract in full control there was some thunderous rucking from Wilson, Webley and Jex that allowed Pontefract's back line to cut through Oldhams defence for Longstaff to score. Minutes later Pontefract took the lead with Aaron Bailey crashing over in the corner. The dominance continued as Pontefract's scrum, taking two balls against the head and with great control from Will Smith and Will Goodall provided a solid platform to gradually suffocate the life out of Oldham. Dylan Fairburn played superb tackling game but it was the Pontefract Captain Kier Woodfield who worked tirelessly for his side and was man of the match. Pontefract showed good discipline and sportsmanship that shone through as a fantastic team effort.
